Australia's dispersed population and dependence on allies

Distance between population centers and reliance on global trade strengthened Australia's need for collective maritime security.

Notes

Australia's widely separated population centers could not readily support one another. Dependence on overseas trade added another reason to seek protection through a larger coalition. Australia also provided a geographical shield for New Zealand and faced greater exposure in several respects. Later partnerships such as AUKUS and Five Eyes illustrate that continuing strategic preference. Compatibility with NATO equipment provides another comparison without making Australia a NATO member.
