Tribals, Didos, and massed high-angle fire

A high-angle Tribal battery blurs the line between destroyer and AA cruiser, raising questions about Dido construction, C-class conversions, and wartime production priorities.

Notes

With eight dual-purpose 4.7-inch guns, the Tribal becomes both a general escort and a back-pocket cruiser able to strengthen fleet air defence. Destroyers could be built in more yards than cruisers, allowing numbers and production geography to compete with the capability of one specialist Dido. The first Dido batch probably survives, while later ships face competition from more destroyers, six-inch cruisers, larger cruisers, or carriers. C-class conversions would also retain a more convincing surface battery instead of becoming narrowly specialized AA ships.
