How archival access limits a destroyer history

Limits on archival access shaped the national coverage and scope of a study of the modern destroyer.

Notes

Alex Clarke limited the Australian and Canadian coverage in his destroyer study because he had not visited the relevant archives. Travel restrictions prevented the research he wanted to undertake. He preferred directing readers to historians who had done that work instead of building a full account solely from their publications. The book's focus was the development of the modern destroyer, and its scope should not be mistaken for a comprehensive history of every ship in the classes.
