The Panther, swept-wing Cougar, and Marine aviation roles

Swept wings turned the Panther lineage into the Cougar, whose Marine roles included reconnaissance, attack, and forward air control.

Notes

The F9F Panther continued in service after establishing a reputation for toughness in Korea. The F9F-6 changed enough to receive the Cougar name, with a prototype using 35-degree swept wings. Production moved beyond the straight-wing Panther into successive Cougar versions, including a two-seat aircraft and a long-nosed photographic variant. The two-seater was the only Cougar version described as seeing combat, serving Marine forward air control in Vietnam. Other Marine Cougar assignments included attack and photographic reconnaissance work. Manufacturer naming families such as Grumman's cats, Douglas's Sky prefix, and McDonnell's supernatural names helped create recognizable identities.
