Palmers' collapse removes a proven warship yard

Palmers' 1933 bankruptcy shows how interwar contraction could erase a yard with experience spanning boilers, battleships, and destroyers.

Notes

Palmers helped pioneer water-tube boilers and built warships ranging from the battlecruiser Queen Mary and battleship Resolution to a long succession of Royal Navy destroyers. Its final destroyers included Duchess and Diana in 1932, only a year before bankruptcy; Diana later served the Royal Canadian Navy as HMCS Margaree. The closure cost the Royal Navy an independent builder that still held useful small-warship experience after completing its last British battleship. Armstrong Whitworth's takeover kept the facilities at Jarrow in use, but it did not replace Palmers as an independent constructor.
