Retrofitting paddles and repairing propulsion at sea

Paddles avoided a propeller opening through the hull, but neither system made conversion simple and screws were awkward to service at sea.

Question

Were paddles easier to retrofit, and could early screw propellers be raised for repair?

Short answer

Paddles avoided a below-water shaft opening but still required major machinery work; lifting a screw was possible in theory, while repairing paddle floats at sea was much more practical.

Notes

Adding paddle machinery did not require a propeller shaft through the bottom of the ship, but the engine and structural work still made conversion difficult. Early screws could sometimes be lifted into a well while sailing. Doing so at sea was theoretically possible, though its practicality was doubtful. Paddle floats, by contrast, were routinely reachable and repairable without opening the hull.
