Why paddle steamers made practical cable layers

Paddle propulsion left the stern clear, reducing the danger that a cable would foul a propeller during laying operations.

Notes

Paddle steamers could be effective cable-laying ships. With no screw propeller at the stern, the cable had less machinery around which to wrap as it paid out. That arrangement reduced a particularly awkward hazard during slow, carefully controlled work. The brief exchange shows how propulsion layout could create a useful maritime-infrastructure niche even when screws dominated ordinary seagoing ships.
