Oxford's eighty-four-year career

Oxford's survival from 1674 to 1758 demonstrates how repeated rebuilding could keep a wooden fourth-rate operational for generations.

Notes

Oxford began as a fifty-four-gun fourth-rate and emerged from her 1727 rebuild as a fifty-gun ship under the 1719 Establishment. Her battery mixed eighteen-pounders, nine-pounders, and lighter six-pounders across the decks. She served from 1674 to 1758, took part in operations including the Battle of Barfleur, and was at one point commanded by Mariot Arbuthnot, later a British admiral in the American Revolutionary War. That eighty-four-year career is the clearest example here of a hull remaining useful across several generations of officers and naval wars.
