The force combined Ottoman, Egyptian, and Tunisian elements with ships of the line, large double-decked frigates, corvettes, brigs, schooners, and fireships. Its nominal strength concealed separate squadrons and a command system that was difficult to reconstruct even from contemporary accounts. James's nineteenth-century naval history supplies much of the reconstruction, while flag assignments, ship names, and ratings remain uncertain. An order of battle should therefore be treated as an argued reconstruction rather than a perfectly stable inventory.
