The sultan orders a naval answer to Venetian galleons

Repeated galley losses pushed the Ottoman leadership to recognize that victory required acquiring sailing warships able to meet Venice on more equal terms.

Notes

After years of commanders minimizing the scale of Ottoman reverses, the sultan called senior officials together to confront the naval problem. Tommaso Morosini's extraordinary action against dozens of galleys made the mismatch difficult to ignore. The leadership response was institutional adaptation: the empire would need galleons of its own rather than continue relying on faith, numbers, and galley tactics alone. This 1648 decision begins a procurement story whose material results appear six years later, after timber seasoning, shipbuilding experience, and foreign acquisition had produced a credible sailing fleet.
