Chapter · 31:51-36:22

Osman Pasha and the British adviser rebuilding the Ottoman Navy

The Ottoman command is examined alongside Royal Navy officer Adolphus Slade’s long effort to reform its fleet and dockyards.

Notes

Osman Pasha commanded the force at Sinop, but his anchorage placed the squadron where Ottoman forts could not protect it effectively. The wider institutional story centers on Adolphus Slade, a Royal Navy captain serving as Ottoman inspector of the navy. Slade assigned ships and tried to mobilize them within a constrained budget while rebuilding the fleet and its supporting system. His work on ships, dockyards, administration, and personnel also gave British officers unusually detailed knowledge of Ottoman capabilities and battle reports.
