ORP Burza was roughly 200 yards astern of Gipsy when the magnetic mine exploded. A young officer aboard the Polish destroyer saw the sky flare as fires and exploding ammunition made the wreck appear to leap upward and men entered the fast-running current. Burza turned toward Gipsy while searchlights picked out survivors' heads in the water. The Polish account records the rescue response from a ship close enough to witness the explosion.
