The Orlandos were first-class armored cruisers built for presence and imperial policing on distant stations. HMS Aurora and HMS Galatea belonged to this class. They displaced roughly 6,000 tons and measured 300 feet (91 metres) long, 56 feet (17 metres) in beam, with a 22.5-foot (6.9-metre) draught. Their installed power was rated at about 8,500 horsepower, a figure explicitly distinguished from shaft horsepower. Three-cylinder triple-expansion engines drove two shafts, supplied by four double-ended boilers. Speed was 17 knots under natural draught and 18 knots under forced draught, with a 10,000-nautical-mile range at 10 knots. Their complement of 484 was substantial but comparable to that of other cruisers.
