Seydi Ali Pasha appears as the Ottoman captain of the sea, with Bekir Bey as his even less visible second in command. Bekir's ship is captured during the campaign, but little more can be said about him. Their obscurity may reflect the limits of accessible English-language sources rather than a total absence of evidence. Seydi Ali's surviving outline includes Georgian origins, service around Istanbul, and repeated command appointments from 1807 to 1809. Between appointments he governs a Black Sea province, and after Mahmud II takes power he is exiled to western Anatolia. The suggested connection between his political position, Selim's fall, and his later exile remains an inference.
