Depth charging fish shoals after Operation Torch

Tribal-class destroyers used depth charges to disperse fish shoals that might conceal submarines approaching North African ports.

Notes

After Operation Torch, Tribal-class destroyers protected captured North African ports against submarine attack. Their crews detected large fish shoals that could create confusing underwater contacts or give a submarine cover during its approach. The destroyers used depth charges to scatter the fish rather than waiting to discover whether an enemy was hiding among them. Anti-submarine warfare included shaping the acoustic environment as well as attacking confirmed targets. Escort crews improvised with available weapons to reduce uncertainty around a vulnerable anchorage.
