Operation Tiger's heavy cover and mine loss

Tiger combined a six-day Gibraltar-to-Alexandria convoy with a Malta supply run, heavy Force H cover, and the mine loss of Empire Song.

Notes

Operation Tiger sent Convoy WS8 from Gibraltar on 6 May 1941 and brought the surviving merchant ships to Alexandria on 12 May. Clan Campbell, Clan Chattan, Clan Lamont, Empire Song, and New Zealand Star were among the six merchant vessels, while six Force H destroyers ran supplies into Malta. Queen Elizabeth, Renown, extra cruisers, nine escorting destroyers, and Ark Royal's Fulmars gave the passage heavy protection, and the force also bombarded Benghazi. Italian aircraft attacked by day, but the Fulmars and destroyer anti-aircraft fire prevented the loss of a merchant ship to air attack. Empire Song was the exception to the operation's success: she struck two mines laid by Italian cruisers.
