Operation Millet prepared the Eastern Fleet for Pacific operations

Strikes on the Nicobar Islands supported the Leyte campaign while testing refuelling at sea and British fighters against Japanese opposition.

Notes

The operation was intended both to distract Japanese attention from the American invasion of Leyte and to help reopen the route toward Singapore. Victorious and Indomitable supplied the carrier striking power while Renown, Phoebe, and destroyers protected the force. Keeping the destroyers in the combat area for several days depended on successful refuelling at sea, making logistics part of the operation's training value. British carrier fighters also met Japanese fighters directly and were judged to have performed well. The fleet treated Millet as preparation for sustained operations alongside the United States Navy in the Pacific.
