Operation Claymore and destroyer-backed commandos

Operation Claymore shows how four Tribal-class destroyers, HMS Legion, two landing ships medium, and landing craft supported a heavily resourced commando raid on the Lofoten Islands.

Notes

Operation Claymore was an early commando raid conducted with modern weapons and dedicated amphibious support. Its success was expected to set the tone for later raids, so the Royal Navy could choose the ships and resources it considered necessary. The force included four Tribal-class destroyers, the L-class destroyer HMS Legion, and two landing ships medium carrying larger landing craft. The raid damaged the German war effort in Norway and removed useful material from the Lofoten Islands. German forces on the islands were left feeling exposed and unprepared for another attack. The destroyers were integral to the amphibious force.
