A one-dimensional submarine offensive was operationally fragile. Wolfpacks could spend patrols in the wrong part of the Atlantic and return without finding a target. Allied electronic intelligence and decrypted signals could route convoys around known concentrations, wasting German patrol effort without a battle. When a pack found a convoy, its escorts concentrated anti-submarine power in the same area and threatened the most aggressive, experienced crews. Losing those veterans also destroyed prewar knowledge and institutional memory that replacement crews could not immediately reproduce.

Wolfpacks, intelligence, and veteran losses
Wolfpacks had to locate convoys across a vast ocean while Allied routing intelligence could bypass them, and successful contact exposed veteran U-boat crews to concentrated escorts.
