Olympia's ocean-cruiser design and heavy battery

Olympia combined long range, speed, heavy eight-inch guns, and a protected deck in a one-off American commerce-raiding cruiser design.

Notes

The flagship emerged from an American modernization program aimed at global reach and trade interdiction. Olympia was the sole product of a commerce-raiding cruiser concept shaped by the Cleveland-era expansion and Benjamin Tracy's Mahan-influenced ambitions. Her machinery supported high speed and a six-thousand-nautical-mile cruising range, while the protected deck guarded vital spaces without a battleship's belt. Twin eight-inch turrets, a five-inch battery, light guns, and torpedo tubes made her an unusually powerful ocean-going command ship for Dewey's campaign.
