Fischer came to Copenhagen with long service and a personal connection to Nelson from earlier West Indies service. During the battle, damage and fire forced him to shift first between ships and then to a shore battery, making command and control exceptionally difficult. He was wounded in the action and later revered in Denmark for his bravery, while Nelson called Copenhagen the fiercest battle he had fought. Fischer's reputation sits alongside the structural weakness of directing a harbour defence from vulnerable floating positions.
