Lord Nelson and Agamemnon remained dangerous enough to constrain Goeben near the Dardanelles, while other older ships reinforced the Channel barrier. Their service in secondary theaters allowed Britain's dreadnoughts and battlecruisers to concentrate in the Grand Fleet. The barrier force was unlikely to defeat the High Seas Fleet by itself, but it could impose damage and delay during a German attempt to reach the Channel. That would leave the Germans facing the pursuing Grand Fleet after already paying a price. Reserve and older ships therefore contributed to Jutland indirectly by protecting the strategic concentration of Britain's strongest ships.
