October Revolution paired Project 68A modernization with repeated presence missions

October Revolution's reserve periods, Project 68A modernization, Syrian-assessment work, and recurring European visits show how an ageing gun cruiser retained political utility.

Notes

The cruiser entered service under another name before becoming October Revolution in 1957, then alternated active service with reserve and modernization periods. Her Project 68A work at Kronstadt differed from Dzerzhinsky's Project 70E missile conversion. Later deployments included activity connected with assessing Syrian armed forces and repeated visits to ports such as Cherbourg, Copenhagen, Gdynia, and Rostock. This itinerary carried Soviet naval presence abroad and within the Soviet political sphere. Missiles were more dangerous weapons, but a large turreted cruiser remained a visually immediate statement of national power.
