OC opened a wider problem of air-ASW cooperation

Debate after OC explored aircraft-guided destroyer sweeps, breaking submarine contact at night, and the carrier's safe place behind an ASDIC screen.

Notes

The commanding officer of Courageous proposed combining spotter-reconnaissance aircraft with destroyers to prevent submarines from maintaining contact. A night sweep followed by a bold change of course might break the shadowing line, while further trials could compare destroyer groups operating with and without aircraft. The discussion expanded into coordination between aircraft and ASDIC vessels, emergency procedures for forced landings near submarines, and whether a carrier could maneuver safely in the triangle behind the screen. Senior officers disagreed about what could be tested without endangering submarines or distorting the exercise, and the commander-in-chief warned against drawing universal conclusions from a carefully arranged set piece. The Royal Navy responded to the growing complexity of carrier employment by creating the Rear Admiral Aircraft Carriers appointment in 1930, filled by former Furious commander Reginald Henderson.
