Objectives versus annihilation in a fictional space battle

A capture-point battle shows how positional victory, enemy destruction, and accumulated damage can pull a commander toward different definitions of success.

Notes

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada II puts mission objectives and enemy destruction in competition. The fleet spreads out to seize several strategic areas before concentrating combat power against the opposing vessel. Holding space continues to earn victory points while the enemy survives, so the operational objective can decide the engagement without annihilation. The playthrough still pursues the opponent, drawn toward a more decisive-looking result than the mission requires. Damage carried out of battle affects later operations and gives that aggression a continuing cost. As a fictional scenario, the battle clarifies mission focus, positional control, and the urge to eliminate the opposing force.
