Chapter ยท 2:22:41-2:26:20

Nubian's near-global Second World War

Nubian's battle record and survival after losing her stern show why the most heavily used Tribals combined extraordinary reach with long repair burdens.

Notes

HMS Nubian's career ranges from Norway through Calabria, Matapan, Sfax, Crete, Sicily, Salerno, and the closing operations in Burma. During the Battle of Crete a bomb blew off her stern, killed seven crew members, wounded twelve, and forced an eighteen-month repair period in Bombay. This was her only long absence from operations during the war. Nubian's record measures the operational demand placed on the Tribals and shows that survival after catastrophic damage depended on escort, towing, dockyard capacity, and time alongside the strength of the hull.
