How coal consumption ended Novik's escape

Novik's attempted run to Vladivostok shows how poor machinery condition and excessive coal consumption could defeat a fast cruiser's operational plan without an enemy winning a conventional chase.

Notes

After the Battle of the Yellow Sea, Novik used a neutral-port stop to coal and continue toward Vladivostok. The cruiser left Tsingtao before the neutral-port time limit expired, but that diplomatic escape did not solve its fuel problem. Poorly maintained machinery consumed coal so rapidly that Novik needed another lengthy stop at Korsakov, giving Japanese cruisers time to find it. Forced back and scuttled, the ship was later salvaged by Japan, but replacement machinery reduced the speed that had made the design valuable.
