Would Royal Navy losses in a sustained Norwegian campaign be at least as bad as those off Greece?
Short answerThey would be serious, but the earlier Luftwaffe, wider waters, and larger support base make the comparison less direct.
NotesA stronger British commitment to Norway would suffer serious losses, but the later Greek campaign is not a direct model. Germany had not yet absorbed its Norwegian anti-shipping lessons or fielded all the heavy bombs and tactics used later. Greece also brought Italian air power into a much narrower Mediterranean operating space. In Norway, the Royal Navy could draw on a larger fleet, more infrastructure, and far more room to manoeuvre across the North Sea and North Atlantic. The Luftwaffe remained dangerous, while its strongest anti-ship performance emerged after training and technical development that were unavailable at the start of the Norwegian campaign.
