Northcliffe brought naval thought to a mass readership

Northcliffe's newspapers and publishing partnership carried Mahan, Corbett, and naval-policy arguments beyond specialist circles.

Notes

Viscount Northcliffe is presented as a newspaper proprietor with an exceptional ability to package news and persuasion for a paying mass audience. His papers included The Times, the Daily Mail, and the Daily Mirror, while his publishing interests also reached inexpensive periodicals and children's education. He spoke with Alfred Thayer Mahan and Julian Corbett, published both writers, and advised them on communicating beyond professional naval circles. Northcliffe concentrated on news and influence while his brother handled the financial side of the business. Their complementary skills built Amalgamated Press into a large publishing concern and gave naval arguments a route into popular debate.
