Would the Regia Marina have liked Northampton-class cruisers?
Short answerIt could have used them, but would probably not have built them because they did not fit Italian speed and design criteria closely enough.
NotesThe Northampton class might have been useful in Italian service if the ships were already available. The Regia Marina valued speed, and the American cruisers were not fast enough to be its natural design choice. Italy would probably employ inherited ships while still preferring its own purpose-built cruisers. Italian requirements also changed frequently, which complicates any claim of a permanent doctrinal fit.
