North Carolina and the limits of importing a carrier design

A 1937 North Carolina design is favored over a late Iowa order, while carrier choices are judged against British repair and basing needs.

Notes

The 1930s exercise moves from Enterprise and Iowa to North Carolina because a 1937 choice is thought to offer a chance of completion before the war. A British adaptation would use different machinery and construction choices. The panel expects that this could change the original design's problems, while explicitly allowing that it would introduce difficulties of its own. It then questions whether an admired Japanese carrier design would fit British service in the Mediterranean or distant Pacific. Damage that required a return to Britain would impose a serious operational penalty. Building more carriers suited to Britain's own support network is therefore favored over importing a design on individual performance alone.
