Why is a 9.2-inch cruiser gun attractive compared with 8-, 10-, or 11-inch weapons?
Short answerIt preserves a rapid cruiser rate of fire while adding penetration, whereas larger intermediate guns become too slow for their limited gain.
NotesA 9.2-inch gun is about the largest calibre able to retain an 8-inch-like rate of fire while adding meaningful penetration. Compared with an 11-inch weapon, it gives up relatively little practical range or striking effect while cycling much faster. A cruiser carrying eight or nine such guns could therefore deliver more hits than a six-gun 11-inch opponent. The 10-inch weapon occupies an awkward middle ground, too heavy for cruiser-like rapid fire and too light to justify the slower machinery of a true capital-ship battery.
