The Nimrod entered service beside the Osprey as one of the Fleet Air Arm's Hawker fighter types of the early 1930s. It began service in 1932 and flew with No. 408 Flight aboard HMS Glorious. Denmark obtained its own Nimrods for naval service, and eight surviving Danish aircraft became German war prizes in 1940. The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service received one aircraft, while Portugal also received the type. Several Royal Navy fighter squadrons operated Nimrods. This interwar fighter was distinct from the much later Comet-derived Hawker Siddeley Nimrod maritime-patrol aircraft.
