Nick Goodhart and the safer carrier landing system

Nick Goodhart's wartime engineering and flying experience culminates in a landing aid that sharply reduces carrier accidents.

Notes

Goodhart's career ran from damage control aboard HMS Formidable through Fleet Air Arm flying and test work, so his engineering drew on operational experience. The mirror system projected a stabilized light reference that a pilot aligned with datum lights to hold the correct approach. It reduced the number of arresting wires and emergency barriers required, freeing weight and space that could improve crowded living arrangements. More importantly, it gave pilots a consistent landing cue as jet approach speeds increased. The US Navy's carrier landing-accident rate reportedly fell by 80 percent between 1954 and 1957 after adoption, showing how the system preserved aircraft and trained aircrew.
