A next-generation US destroyer built around the Zumwalt hull

A pragmatic design proposal: retain the Zumwalt hull and power margin while replacing the combat system and weapons fit.

Question

What might the next generation of US Navy destroyers look like?

Short answer

A practical route would reuse the Zumwalt hull and power supply with a new superstructure, updated systems, and a larger missile fit.

Notes

The hull and electrical capacity are valuable sunk design work. A new superstructure, current combat systems, and more missiles could produce a capable ship more quickly than a wholly new design. A later answer notes that a 14,000- or 15,000-ton successor is a cruiser in all but political naming, regardless of a destroyer label. The US Navy still needs ships able to perform the large magazine, command, and first-rate combat role associated with cruisers. Reusing Zumwalt's power-rich hull therefore answers both the engineering problem and part of the looming cruiser-replacement problem, although institutional choices do not always favour the simplest route.
