Chapter · 55:32-59:31

New Zealand's large maritime obligations

A population of about five million must support responsibilities across a large EEZ, Antarctic interests, Pacific island relationships, and trade routes far beyond New Zealand's shores.

Notes

New Zealand's small population is the central constraint on its force structure, but the country's maritime responsibilities are not correspondingly small. Its extensive exclusive economic zone, Antarctic presence, and political relationships across Pacific island states create demands far beyond its shores. Like Australia, New Zealand depends on global trade and cannot opt out of the security conditions that allow that network to function. A compact navy still needs patrol, sealift, surveillance, and combat capability across long distances.
