New York class: superheaters and triple-expansion engines

The New York class used oil-sprayed coal boilers, selective superheating, and vertical triple-expansion engines to exceed its designed power.

Notes

The New York class carried fourteen Babcock & Wilcox coal-fired boilers assisted by oil spray. Eight used superheating while six remained conventional, giving the machinery plant two different steam treatments within one design. Steam drove vertical triple-expansion engines. The installation was designed for 28,100 shaft horsepower and produced roughly 600 more in practice. This was a transitional propulsion plant in which improved steam treatment still fed reciprocating engines.
