The explosion opened a hole near New Ironsides' starboard quarter, shifted riveted joints, and damaged the armoury bulkhead and storerooms. Two men were wounded, one later died, and a third was described as suffering confusion, possibly from shock or a mild traumatic brain injury. The crew repaired the opening quickly, though the ship remained somewhat leaky, and she later visited Philadelphia for further work before resuming blockade duty. CSS David's commander ordered his damaged craft abandoned. Two crewmen returned, restarted the fire, and escaped with the boat, while the commander and another man surrendered. Calling the raid a Confederate victory is difficult when the Union ironclad returned to service, David was nearly lost, and half her crew became prisoners.
