While the battlecruisers manoeuvre away from torpedoes, the opposing destroyer forces press their own attack. HMS Petard torpedoes Seydlitz, and the British flotilla disables or sinks German torpedo boats during the exchange. HMS Nestor and HMS Nomad are themselves stopped by shellfire and later sunk as Scheer's dreadnoughts pass. Captain Barry Bingham is rescued and receives the Victoria Cross for leading the attack.
