Watership Down explains the G3 deterrent

Bigwig's stand against a rival warren supplies the analogy: a visible G3 could imply that still more powerful British battleships waited elsewhere.

Notes

Watership Down supplies an analogy for Britain's planned capital-ship display. Bigwig, the strongest rabbit in the defending warren, holds a tunnel because his chief ordered him to do so. That makes the attackers imagine a still larger and more dangerous rabbit behind him. A G3 visiting foreign ports was supposed to create the same uncertainty: impressive as it was, the ship would represent only the fleet's fast outward-facing arm. The implied N3 force at home could make American and Japanese planners doubt whether their own programs measured up.
