The recall signal and Nelson's decision

Parker's famous recall signal gave Nelson cover to withdraw if necessary; Nelson instead judged the battle worth continuing.

Notes

Parker could see grounded British ships in distress but could not see clearly through the smoke, so his signal offered Nelson an escape from blame if the attack had become untenable. The Articles of War demanded that officers do their utmost in battle, making a formal recall valuable cover for a necessary retreat. Nelson's reported response, looking through his blind eye, captures the decision to continue. Confusing signal arrangements also led Amazon to withdraw from its attack near Tre Kroner under heavy fire.
