Chapter · 11:44-25:02

Nelson, heroism, and historical judgment

A leadership discussion uses Nelson to separate naval achievement from the wider moral record of a historical figure.

Notes

Nelson's standing here rests on service and battle leadership, without requiring every aspect of his politics or private life to be exemplary. A fragment of private correspondence cannot provide a complete account of a person or its own context. Later mythmaking can sanitize a historical figure so thoroughly that ordinary human complexity appears shocking when it resurfaces. For career models, an officer such as Collingwood may offer a more practical template than Nelson's exceptional wartime career.
