Nelson's career continued from the Baltic campaign toward Trafalgar. While on leave in England, he testified for Edward Despard, praising a former comrade before conceding under cross-examination that he had not seen him for twenty years. Nelson returned to operational prominence as commander in chief of the Mediterranean Fleet in 1803 with HMS Victory as his flagship. His promotion while at sea in 1804 leads directly into the campaign that culminated at Trafalgar. Copenhagen confirmed his usefulness as a fighting admiral even though his political judgment could still create difficulties.
