Chapter ยท 17:49-20:33

Bainbridge, fleet command, and Tunisian navigation study

William Bainbridge modeled command of forces larger than one ship, while nine months in Tunis deepened Farragut's navigation, cartography, and oceanographic knowledge.

Notes

Service under William Bainbridge gave Farragut a command model different from Porter's. Bainbridge was better able to coordinate a group of ships, illustrating why excellence in commanding one vessel does not automatically translate into fleet command. Farragut then spent nine months in Tunis, described here as one of the world's leading centers for navigation and mapping knowledge. That combination of fleet-command observation and technical study enlarged the education he would later apply to Civil War operations.
