Navarino makes Greek independence possible

Destroying the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet prevented reinforcement of Ibrahim Pasha, allowing a French expedition to compel evacuation and opening the way to modern Greek independence.

Notes

Whatever the allies' original strategic purpose, Navarino removed the maritime means of sustaining the Egyptian army in Greece. A French expeditionary force could then land, press for evacuation, and block a Russian force from taking the same role. Once the Egyptian army withdrew, the Greek independence movement had the space to establish a new state. Navarino became a decisive enabling event in the foundation of modern Greece even though that was not Britain's preferred route to the outcome.
