Would the Royal Navy benefit from navalized Apache helicopters?
Short answerBritain already has partly navalized Apaches, proven from HMS Ocean, though their size limits practical shipboard use.
NotesBritish Apache engines and associated systems received saltwater protection, so the aircraft already possess an important degree of navalization. That preparation enabled combat operations from HMS Ocean during the Libya campaign and permits use from Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. It does not turn the helicopter into a compact frigate aircraft, because its footprint and lack of convenient folding arrangements remain limiting. Even on a carrier, every Apache consumes considerable deck and hangar space that must be weighed against other aircraft.
