What are modern navies not putting enough effort into?
Short answerMaritime presence and the shipping side of amphibious warfare, where helicopter capacity and sea lift constrain what small ships can do.
NotesThe marine or troop perspective differs from the shipping problem: landing a company quickly still demands enough flight-deck spots, helicopters, escorts, and sea lift. Small ships can make sense for the U.S. Marine Corps because they sit beside a much larger amphibious fleet, but they are less convincing as a substitute for major LHD capacity in smaller navies. Tactical mobility therefore depends directly on hull size and supporting infrastructure.
