The myth of technologically stagnant naval leaders

Battleship-era admirals relied on recently introduced fire control and radio technology, complicating the stereotype of an inherently tradition-bound Navy.

Notes

Battleship admirals of the period worked with director fire control, radio telegraphy, long-range gunnery, and the organizations needed to use them. Much of this technology was only fifteen or twenty years old, so senior officers had built their careers amid rapid technical change. Their ships demanded institutional adaptation alongside new equipment. This recent experience weakens the stereotype of an inherently stagnant Navy and helps explain why naval institutions could tackle an unfamiliar land-warfare problem.
