Ship quality does not erase numerical and missile threats

A contemporary naval analogy shows why dismissing an opponent's ship quality can be as dangerous as treating that opponent as unbeatable.

Notes

A 2022 claim by a US Navy officer about American and Chinese warship quality extends the Finnish War's leadership lesson into modern naval planning. Even if one side believes its ships are individually superior, defenders still have to detect and defeat every incoming missile. Numerical superiority matters once the volume of weapons creates more threats than a force can absorb. Underestimating an opponent produces false confidence and poor preparation. Treating the opponent as invincible makes preparation seem pointless. Sound planning requires an honest capability assessment and enough readiness to cope when the estimate proves imperfect.
