Channel assistance is operationally awkward but politically valuable for the Royal Navy. The service can show that its ships and people solve a visible government problem when civilian capacity is insufficient. That public utility matters because the Ministry of Defence must continually justify funding to ministers, the Treasury, and voters. Peacetime civil support can therefore influence defense budgets even when it is not the mission around which a navy would design its fleet.
